Ho finito di scrivere un romanzo: cosa succede dopo? What happens when the novel is finished: starting a second writing phase

 

Ho ultimato il mio romanzo poco meno di un mese fa.

E ora? Ora c'è un mondo ancora da fare, da scrivere, da pensare. Sono alla prima rilettura: correggo errori sfuggiti al computer, riformulo periodi, elimino parti prolisse e aggiungo descrizioni che, alla prima stesura, mi avrebbero distratto e fatto perdere il filo della trama, ma che aggiungono carattere e intensità alle pagine.

Lascio che i personaggi si svelino pian piano, raccontando a ogni pagina qualcosa di più e permettendo che gli eventi mettano in luce aspetti dei loro caratteri, bisogni e desideri, tratteggiandoli come se fossero individui realmente esistenti. E non è forse così? A volte la finzione è più vera della realtà. E' il posto dove possiamo concederci di guardare in faccia le cose come stanno, vivere l'impensabile, l'imponderabile, ciò che è fuori portata nella vita di tutti i giorni.
E' un'avventura meravigliosa: spero possa mantenere le promesse ed esserlo anche per i lettori, quando il testo sarà definitivamente pronto.

I finished my novel about a month ago. And now? There's a world still to be created, written, and thought about. I'm on my first reread: I'm correcting errors that the computer did not catch, rewording sentences, eliminating long-winded passages and adding descriptions that, in the first draft, would have distracted me and made me lose the plot, but which add character and intensity to the pages. I let the characters reveal themselves little by little, discovering more on each page and allowing events to highlight aspects of their personalities, needs and desires, portraying them as if they were real individuals. And isn't that so? Sometimes fiction is more tru than reality. It's the place where we can allow ourselves to face things as they are, to experience the unthinkable, the imponderable, what is out of reach in everyday life. It's a wonderful adventure: I hope it can keep its promises and be wonderful for readers too, when the text is finally ready.
